Litigation search: Hong Kong
A litigation search runs a company's or a person's name against Hong Kong court records and returns three things: judgments published by the Judiciary, with the case reference, neutral citation, date, court, judge, parties and a link to the judgment; writs of summons filed in the District Court and the Court of First Instance, and civil appeals in the Court of Appeal, with the case number, date, plaintiffs, defendants, solicitors, nature of claim and amount; and hearings listed in the daily cause lists of the High Court, District Court, tribunals and magistrates' courts. The report states the coverage dates for each court and cause type, so the reader knows what period it covers.
Banks and lenders order it before extending credit, to see whether a borrower is being sued for debt. Compliance teams order it on a customer and its directors as the adverse information part of due diligence. Litigators order it on an opponent, and procurement teams on a supplier. Insurers order it on a claimant or a policyholder company.
Send the name exactly as the company or person uses it, in English and Chinese where both are known, and any former names, since records match on the party name as filed. The report comes back as a PDF in the same thread, or through the API. Matches on a common name may concern an unrelated party, and the report says so; the case details let the reader confirm each one.

Questions
Which courts does it cover?
Judgments published by the Judiciary; writs of summons in the District Court and the Court of First Instance, and civil appeals in the Court of Appeal, by cause type; and hearings in the High Court, District Court, Lands Tribunal, Labour Tribunal, Small Claims Tribunal and the magistrates' courts. The Court of Final Appeal, Competition Tribunal, Coroner's Court, Family Court and Obscene Articles Tribunal are not included. The report lists the coverage for each.
How far back does it go?
It depends on the court and cause type, and the report states the earliest date for each. Anything filed before those dates is not included.
Can a result belong to a different company with a similar name?
Yes. Records match on the party name as filed, so a shared distinctive word or the same personal name can bring in an unrelated party. Each record shows enough detail to confirm it, and the report says which matches to check.
Is it the same as a bankruptcy and winding-up search?
No. Bankruptcy and compulsory winding-up petitions are searched at the Official Receiver's Office. Order both when you need the full picture.
