iAM Smart verification: Government digital identity
iAM Smart verification confirms a Hong Kong resident's identity through the Hong Kong Government's digital identity scheme. Your site or app starts the request; the resident taps Continue with iAM Smart, or scans a QR code on a desktop, sees in the iAM Smart app who is asking and what will be shared, and authorises it. The scheme then returns the name, HKID number, date of birth and residential address the resident authorised, marked as confirmed by the government, with the source and the time of the check recorded in a signed audit record together with the consent reference.
Banks, securities firms, insurers and wealth platforms use it to open accounts without photographing identity cards or chasing proof of address. Syfe Hong Kong and Chocolate Finance onboard Hong Kong customers this way, and their case studies describe what changed. Because the identity comes from the issuing government and not from an image, there is nothing to forge, and the HKMA, SFC and Insurance Authority each recognise iAM Smart for account opening.
The check runs through the GovVerify API, which sends the request to the resident's phone and returns the result as structured data in one schema shared with China eID, Singpass and UAE Pass. There is nothing for the resident to install beyond the iAM Smart app they already have. The result returns as soon as the resident authorises it.

Questions
Does the resident have to consent?
Yes. Every GovVerify check runs with the individual's consent, given in the iAM Smart app, and the consent reference is recorded in the audit record.
What details does an iAM Smart check return?
The name, HKID number, date of birth and residential address held by iAM Smart, once the resident authorises them in the app. They arrive as fields, marked as confirmed by the government.
Who can verify with iAM Smart?
Holders of a Hong Kong identity card aged 11 or above who have registered for iAM Smart.
Can we order it by email?
The check itself runs through the API, since it goes to the resident's phone and back to your system. You can set it up and ask questions by email, and the email agent can be copied on a request.
How fast is it?
The result returns when the resident authorises the request in the app, typically within seconds of doing so.
