Company search in Argentina

Argentina’s company registration is handled by the competent local public registry. The Inspección General de Justicia (IGJ) is the relevant authority for its Buenos Aires City scope; it is not a nationwide company registrar. Other provinces have their own authorities.

The CUIT is a separate federal tax identifier. A useful search request specifies the company’s exact name, legal form, registered jurisdiction, CUIT and local registration reference. Record availability, access requirements and retrieval options are confirmed for that authority.

Registry

Competent local Public Registry; IGJ for its Buenos Aires City scope

Registro Público; Inspección General de Justicia

The competent local registration authority; IGJ under the national justice administration for its territorial scope

The applicable registry depends on the company’s registered jurisdiction and legal form. A Buenos Aires City company may be within IGJ’s scope, while a Buenos Aires Province company is a separate enquiry through the provincial authority. Confirm the exact location before requesting acts or certificates.

The local registry holds formation and relevant later registered company acts within its scope. Federal tax registration supplies identity information through the CUIT but does not replace those records. The procedure for copies, status information and certification varies by authority and item.

Identifier

Unique Tax Identification Code (CUIT), with the local registry reference

The CUIT is an 11-digit tax identifier commonly displayed as two digits, eight digits and a check digit. Preserve all digits. Record the competent registry, registration number or entry reference and legal name separately; a tax number alone does not identify the complete corporate file.

Worth knowing

  • Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires (CABA) and Provincia de Buenos Aires are separate registration jurisdictions. An address described only as Buenos Aires needs clarification.
  • A sociedad anónima and a sociedad de responsabilidad limitada have different capital and ownership records. Formation participants and registered officers should not be relabelled as present beneficial owners.
  • Do not assume a nationwide public beneficial ownership search. Declarations and access rules depend on the applicable authority and purpose; lawful company-held evidence can be necessary.
  • A company’s continued registration does not establish solvency, operating activity or every relevant sector permission. Check the actual activity and licence separately.
  • Retain Spanish originals and record the issuing registry, document reference, date and provenance. Confirm certification, translation and recipient requirements before ordering.

Questions

Can IGJ search every Argentine company?

No. IGJ has a defined territorial and subject-matter scope. Identify the company’s registered jurisdiction and competent local registry before placing the request.

What if the address only says Buenos Aires?

Clarify whether it is Buenos Aires City or Buenos Aires Province. They have different registration authorities, and the distinction affects where the record is requested.

Is the CUIT the local company registration number?

No. It is the federal tax identifier. Preserve it alongside the company’s local registry reference and compare the names across both records.
