Company search in Ireland

Irish company records are public. The Companies Registration Office (CRO) shows a company's name, number, type, registered office, status and registration date free on CORE, and sells the company printout and images of every filed document for a few euro each. The beneficial ownership register is a different matter: since SI 308/2023 the public can see only the entity and the number of beneficial owners filed, and the names are released to designated persons and to applicants who prove a legitimate interest.

Fill Easy can order CRO documents by email or through the API as part of its company registry search across 60+ jurisdictions. Price and turnaround are confirmed with the order.

Registry

Companies Registration Office (CRO)

Office of the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment

The CRO is the registrar of companies and business names in Ireland under the Companies Act 2014. Companies file through CORE, the CRO's online system, which is also the public search channel. Every company files an annual return (Form B1) within 56 days of its annual return date, usually with its financial statements attached.

A search on CORE by name or number is free and shows the company name and number, type, registered office, status and registration date. Detailed information is bought through a CRO customer account: the company printout and copies of filed documents, such as the annual return with accounts, the constitution and the forms recording changes of directors and registered office. The Register of Beneficial Ownership (RBO) is run separately, under the Registrar of Beneficial Ownership, and its personal data is not open to the public.

Identifier

Change of directors or secretary (Form B10)The appointment or resignation of a director or secretary, with the date it took effect, as notified to the CRO.

Worth knowing

  • The RBO is closed to the general public. After the CJEU judgment of 22 November 2022 in joined cases C-37/20 and C-601/20, SI 308/2023 replaced general public access with a legitimate-interest test. Members of the public see the entity and the number of beneficial owners filed; designated persons (obliged entities under Irish AML law) view beneficial ownership details through the RBO portal, without day of birth or residential address; and other applicants must show the Registrar they are engaged in preventing, detecting or investigating money laundering or terrorist financing. The RBO's 2024 annual report records one such application that year, which was refused.
  • The RBO lists a beneficial ownership report at €2.50, payable by card, for those with designated person access. The Sixth Anti-Money Laundering Directive (Directive (EU) 2024/1640) sets harmonised access rules for all member states, so the categories of applicant may widen as Ireland transposes it.
  • The shareholders on an annual return are registered members as at the return date, which may be up to a year old and are not necessarily the beneficial owners. Check the date of the last return and the forms filed since.
  • A director must state a usual residential address. The CRO allows an officer to apply on Form T1 to keep a new address off the public record where disclosure is a risk to personal safety; the procedure does not apply to an address already on the register.
  • Records are in English, so no translation is normally needed. A duplicate certificate of incorporation downloaded free from CORE is valid only for public sector use; a paper duplicate for other purposes carries a fee.

Questions

Is an Irish company search free?

The basic search on CORE is free and shows the company name and number, type, registered office, status and registration date. The company printout and copies of filed documents are paid, at €3.50 for a printout and €2.50 per document image on the CRO's fee schedule.

Are the shareholders of an Irish company public?

Yes. The annual return (Form B1) filed with the CRO each year includes the details of the company's shareholders and its share capital, and copies can be bought by anyone. Those are registered shareholders; the beneficial owners filed with the RBO are not public.

Who can search the RBO beneficial ownership register?

Since SI 308/2023, members of the public see only the entity and the number of beneficial owners filed. Designated persons under Irish AML law can view and buy beneficial ownership reports through the RBO portal, and other applicants must prove to the Registrar a legitimate interest linked to preventing, detecting or investigating money laundering or terrorist financing.

What is a CRO B1 form?

The B1 is the annual return every Irish company files with the CRO within 56 days of its annual return date. It confirms the company's directors, secretary, registered office, share capital and shareholders, and usually has the financial statements attached.

How do I get a company printout from the CRO?

Search the company on CORE and order the printout through a CRO customer account with credit; the fee is €3.50. Fill Easy can order the printout and the filed documents on your behalf, with price and turnaround confirmed with the order.
