A Nigerian CAC number identifies the registered form before the ownership review begins.
Keep RC, BN and other entity-type references intact. A CAC name match is the start of the review, followed by dated records and ownership evidence.

A Nigerian company number and a business-name number refer to different registered forms. The Corporate Affairs Commission’s public search helps locate registered entities. Matching a name is useful, but the legal form determines whose obligations and records you are reviewing.
The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) provides registration and company-information services. Use its official search to establish a candidate, then obtain the specific records needed for identity, status, ownership and authority.
Preserve the registration prefix
Ask for the full legal name and complete CAC registration number from the issued registration evidence. Keep RC for a company, BN for a business name or the other prefix shown on the document. A bare serial number can lose the distinction between different registered forms.
Compare the legal name, number and entity type across the CAC result, certificate and contract. A brand may be used by a company, sole proprietor or partnership. Clarify who receives funds and who is responsible for the agreement before collecting documents for the wrong person.
A business-name registration does not automatically establish a separate limited company. Identify the proprietor or partners and the legal arrangement relevant to the contract. If the proprietor is itself a company, match that company through its own registration record.
Use the public search as a discovery record
Search by the exact identifier where the service supports it. For a name search, compare all available matching particulars before selecting the entity. Similar group names, abbreviations and spelling variants can produce several candidates.
Retain the public result, service URL and retrieval date. Read the status wording exactly as returned. An unfamiliar status should be investigated through the relevant CAC record or confirmation rather than translated into a conclusion that the company is active, dissolved or financially distressed.
Public discovery is different from obtaining an issued certificate or detailed extract. If a receiving institution requires an official document, confirm the requested product and format. A screenshot of a name match is not automatically equivalent to an issued record.
Build the document request around questions
Choose the registration evidence and filed records that explain the matter under review. Incorporation documents identify the initial legal and constitutional position. Later amendments, appointments or returns may be needed to establish a more recent position.
- Registration: request the relevant certificate or issued record for the entity type.
- Constitution: obtain the company’s constitutional documents and relevant amendments where governance or capital rights matter.
- Officials and holders: identify the available filed particulars and the date they represent.
- History: specify the period and changes needed to connect earlier documents to the current entity.
Confirm availability and the requester's access route for each item. Do not assume that every document on a company file is downloadable from the basic public search. State whether the receiving institution requires ordinary copies, certified copies or another formal authentication process.
Read the initial position separately from today
Incorporators, founding subscriptions and officers in original documents can differ from the current position. Use a later record or company-held register where ownership or authority has changed. Retain the effective dates and supporting filings.
If a company reports a transfer after the latest available registry information, request the dated shareholder register and relevant transfer or notification evidence. Explain the interval between the effective event and the retrieved record.
An issued document obtained today can reproduce earlier filed information. Keep its issue date, the underlying reporting date and the retrieval date separately. This prevents a fresh copy from being described as a fresh ownership declaration.
Trace corporate holders and control
Registered shareholders are direct holders of record. They can be companies or persons acting in another capacity. Request share classes and quantities where a list of names does not explain the relevant interests or voting rights.
Match corporate holders to their own complete registration identifiers and jurisdictions. Continue the relevant ownership paths towards natural persons and aggregate interests that reach the same person through several branches.
Consider control arrangements separately from direct share percentages. A voting agreement, nominee arrangement or other authority can affect the assessment even where a basic holder list appears simple. Apply the tests relevant to your institution and the relationship rather than assuming a registry output has completed that judgement.
Scope beneficial ownership enquiries carefully
CAC beneficial ownership and persons-with-significant-control services should be checked for their current access route, coverage and permitted use. A standard entity search should not be described as a universal current UBO verification.
If a relevant official ownership record is accessible, retain its date, scope and source. Compare it with shareholder evidence and the company’s explanation of control. Identify whether the result represents a declaration, a filed record or another product rather than implying independent validation of every detail.
Where access or coverage leaves a gap, obtain lawful company-held evidence and a dated ownership declaration. Record the remaining limitation. The absence of an accessible result is not proof that the company has no beneficial owner.
Establish authority for the agreement
An officer listed in a company record is not automatically authorised to sign every transaction alone. Review the constitution and the relevant board resolution, mandate or delegation. Match the named signers to the people and capacities described in those documents.
For a business name, the authority evidence must connect the signer to the proprietor or partnership accepting the obligation. A company-director checklist may be inappropriate to that form. Resolve the actual relationship before treating a signature as binding evidence.
An administrator's or company secretary's confirmation can help explain the records. Preserve the issuer and capacity, and keep the supporting source documents where the decision requires them. Such a confirmation has a different provenance from a CAC-issued record.
Separate registration from operational checks
Tax references belong to the tax-registration assessment. CAC registration does not prove tax compliance, a bank account's ownership or the financial capacity to perform the agreement. Request those items through appropriate sources when they are material.
For a regulated activity, identify the responsible authority and exact licensed entity. A licence held by an affiliate should not be attributed to the company named in the contract. Keep the scope and date of the permission with the registry identity match.
Financial statements have reporting periods and assurance levels of their own. Label company-supplied information accurately and distinguish it from filed or independently audited material. A registration status cannot substitute for that financial review.
Place a defined Nigerian request
Send the full name, complete CAC identifier and legal form through our mailbox. Specify the registration records, relevant filings, history period, certification needs and any ownership or authority documents for which cooperation is available.
Availability and access are confirmed for the requested items. Price and expected turnaround are confirmed when the order is accepted. Our international company registry search supports the scoped request, with the returned evidence assessed for its actual source and limits.
Does your Nigerian file identify the legal form and complete number before drawing conclusions about owners or the person signing the contract?
